The Data: Coverage, Periodicity, and Timeliness
Coverage characteristics

5.1.1 Statistical presentation

Data are disseminated on the producer price index (Índice de Preços por Atacado (IPA)) (August/94 = 100), which is an economic indicator that has been disseminated since 1944. It is the main component of a general price index (Índice Geral de Preços (IGP-DI).

The index is structured to measure the rate of change of prices of a sample of merchandise at the wholesale level in business to business transactions in the following productive areas of the country: Alagoas, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Panará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janerio, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, São Paulo e Tocantis.

The price survey of 1,651 establishment that is conducted monthly provides about 16,000 quotations. A Laspeyres formula is used to calculate the index, and it is not seasonally adjusted.

There are 462 commodities/products covered by the index and the nature of prices includes taxes and duties when applicable on them. The weights are monthly revised due to changes in the relative ponderation of the components of the index. The index is disseminated monthly at a press conference held in accordance with a specific calendar.

5.1.3 Advance release calendar

An advance release calendar that gives one quarter ahead notice of the precise release dates is published on the website of the Central Bank of Brazil (http://www.bcb.gov.br/sddsi/calendar_i.htm), and on IMF’s Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (DSBB). A regular notice on the Advance Release Calendar is also published in the Monthly Bulletin of the Central Bank of Brazil.

Simultaneous release to all
interested parties

5.1.4 Simultaneous release

The results are released in a press conference. Information is released in Portuguese to journalists through press releases at the time of the press conference. The detailed information about the index is made available at (http://www.fgv.br/ibre/dgd) after free registration. There is no specific publication for this index, because it is widely disseminated to the public by the press in the newspapers, television, magazines, and also at the FGV site at the Internet (http://www.fgv.br).
