The Data: Coverage, Periodicity, and Timeliness
Coverage characteristics

5.1.1 Statistical presentation

Data are disseminated in millions of U.S. dollars on exports (fob), imports (fob) and the trade balance valued at transaction prices and cover the whole country.

Seasonally adjusted figures on total imports and non oil imports are also published.

The data are compiled in accordance with the fifth edition of the IMF's Balance of Payments Manual and are based mostly on administrative registers of customs and administrating societies of free trade zones.

Data arising from customs include breakdowns by use (cif values) and by use and geographical origin (fob values), in the case of imports; and by principal products, and by economic sector and geographical destination, in the case of exports (fob values).

Geographic detail: The direction of trade data by country are published with product group detail (country by commodity or group of commodities). The detailed commodity breakdown by country at the eight-digit HS level is available but not published. However, it may be photocopied by the users.

Commodity detail: The primary trade data (customs declarations) are at the 8-digits level of the HS, and are cross-classified at the three-digit level of ISIC.

Other: Unit value indices of imports and exports are computed quarterly. Export indices are computed at the 'summary' level of the ISIC classification. For imports, the indices are calculated for consumption goods, capital goods and intermediate goods, including separate indices for fuels and lubricants and petroleum.

Periodicity

4.1.1 Periodicity

Data on exports and imports are disseminated on a weekly basis, on the 7th, 15th, 23d and last day of each month. They are reported as cumulative figures within each month.
Timeliness

4.1.2 Timeliness

One week: for the intra-monthly cumulative totals on exports and imports and trade balance.
Two weeks: for the intra-monthly cumulative breakdowns on imports by use, and on export by principal products and economic sector.

Three weeks: for the monthly additional breakdowns by geographical origin and destination.

For these purposes, the “weeks” are defined as covering the following days of each month:  1 to 7, 8 to 15, 16 to 23, and 24 to the last day of the month.

Access by the Public
Advance dissemination of
release calendar

5.1.3 Advance release calendar

An advance release calendar that gives a 12-month-ahead notice of the precise release dates of the weekly data is published on the Central Bank of Chile's Internet website (http://www.bcentral.cl/eng/ under 'Economic Statistics/SDDS/Advance Release Calendar').

In addition, the website publishes a quarter-ahead calendar on publications of economic statistics and reports, in Spanish, that gives the precise dates of publication of the Indicadores Económicos de Coyuntura (Short run economic Indicators), and the Boletín Mensual during the corresponding three-month period (http://www.bcentral.cl/esp/) under 'Sala de Prensa/Calendario de Eventos Económicos').

Simultaneous release to all
interested parties

5.1.4 Simultaneous release

The data are released simultaneously to all interested parties in the Central Bank's weekly 'Short Run Economic Indicators' (on the 7th, 15th, and 23rd days of the month, and at the end of the month) and the Central Bank's monthly Boletín Mensual (each 23rd) in Spanish.

Both publications are posted on the Central Bank's website. The latter is also put on sale and sent to subscribers.

Simultaneously or subsequently, the data are also posted in the corresponding series on the website of the Central Bank of Chile under 'Economic Statistics/Series of Indicators/Foreign Sector', for intra-monthly cumulative totals, and under 'Economic Statistics/Statistical database/External Sector' for monthly data on exports by product and imports by use.

Interested users can request an instant e-mail notification service which alerts them when the 'Short Run Economic Indicators', and the Boletín Mensual are published. The releases, edited only in Spanish, are not mentioned in the notification if the service is requested in English.

The Spanish request form is available at http://www.bcentral.cl/esp under 'otros servicios/notificación por email'; the English request form is available at http://www.bcentral.cl/eng under 'other services/e-mail notification service'.

These services and the access to the data on the Central Bank website are free of charge.

4.3.1 Revision schedule

The aggregate weekly data are preliminary when first released and may be revised at the time of the first release of detailed data for that period.

Revisions of the monthly and the quarterly data follow the calendar announced for Balance of Payments and National Accounts (see May 2006 Boletín Mensual).

The quarterly data of a calendar year are revised each time a new quarter of that year is first released, when more accurate basic information is available.

Annual revisions are carried out on March of the following two years. The main causes of revisions are explained upon release of new quarterly or annual data.
