5.1.1 Statistical presentation

The data are disseminated in million of Costa Rica Colones on the analytical records of the BCCR.

Data are disseminated on:

  1. Monetary Base. Includes currency (notes and coins) held by the public plus currency held by commercial banks and bank reserves (including required reserves and excess reserves) from the commercial banks held in the central bank's accounts.
  2. Net credit to the central government: Covering credit to the budgetary central government only.
  3. Gross Credit to the rest of the non-financial public sector: Financing to non-financial public enterprises and those considered comprising the rest of the non-financial public sector, including local governments.
  4. Credit to the private sector (non-financial private sector).
  5. Credit to commercial banks.
  6. Net external position: comprising gross foreign assets less gross foreign liabilities.

5.1.3 Advance release calendar

An advance release calendar which gives one-quarter-ahead notice of the precise release dates is disseminated on the Internet on the IMF's Data Dissemination Bulletin Board (http://dsbb.imf.org)  and on the BCCR's website: http://indicadoreseconomicos.bccr.fi.cr/indicadoreseconomicos/.

The public are informed of this through a press release.

0.1.1 Responsibility for collecting, processing, and disseminating statistics

Central Bank of Costa Rica

The data are compiled and disseminated in accordance with the terms and conditions of the National Statistical System (SEN) Law No. 7839 of November 4 , 1998 and the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) Organic law 7558 of November 3, 1995 (with subsequent revisions).

Law 7558 Article 14 (a) provides that, within the first 15 business days of each month, a statement of financial position shall be published, providing broad details on the Bank's assets and liabilities. Article 14 (d) provides that a monthly statistical summary shall be published of Costa Rica's economic statistics, with information on money and credit. Article 16 provides that the annual report (Memoria Annual) shall be published within the first three months of each year and that it shall contain the economic and financial position presented during the course of the year ended.

 

Law 7839 Article 2 governs the production, preparation, and dissemination of statistics by the institutions of the National Statistical System.

0.1.3 Confidentiality of individual reporters' data

According to Law 7839 Article 4 all agencies of the national statistics system are required to compile and manage statistical data in accordance with the principles of statistical confidentiality.

 

Law 7558 Article 132 provides that individual data submitted by both individuals and legal entities shall be kept fully confidential.

Law 7839 is available, in Spanish, at the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC) Internet website at http://inec.go.cr and for a fee equal to the cost of the copies at the Statistical Dissemination and Information Service of the INEC, Tel ( 506) 221-9656, Fax (506) 223-0813, e-mail: inecinfo@racsa.co.cr.

Law 7558 is available, in Spanish, at http://www.bccr.fi.cr/  in the "publicaciones" section. The Information Center of the BCCR, telephone (506) 243-4460 or 243-4462; fax (506) 243-4583; e-mail centroinf@bccr.fi.cr) , also processes requests from the public for photocopies (at a set cost) or free of charge via electronic mail.

4.3.1 Revision schedule

The data are preliminary when first released and are indicated as such in a footnote.Revisions are made in the second and fourth week of the month after the reference period, before they become final.

Any major changes in the methodology are announced as technical memoranda on the BCCR's website, at the time the changes are implemented.

5.2.1 Dissemination of documentation on concepts, scope, classifications, basis of recording, data sources, and statistical techniques

The Central Bank of Costa Rica's website under "economic indicators" (Indicadores Económicos) is used to publish technical memoranda to keep users abreast of methodological changes, or significant changes affecting the monetary and financial statistical series, and the procedures that have been used to provide comparable series for economic analysis purposes.

These technical memoranda are also available to the public in the Estadisticas Economicas.

Information on methodology may also be obtained from the contact person.

4.2.2 Temporal consistency

  • The Central Bank of Costa Rica's Internet Website (http://www.bccr.fi.cr/)  publishes detailed time series data of the monetary base, domestic credit and the net external position on a monthly basis from 1987.
  • The semi-annual journal, Revista Económica Semestral (also available at http://www.bccr.fi.cr/  in the Publicaciones section) publishes detailed time series data from the second half of 1996 with statistical information for the monetary sector on total liquidity, money supply, quasi-money, and net domestic credit.
  • The bi-weekly Estadisticas Economicas disseminates detailed time series data of the analytical accounts of the central bank on a monthly basis from 1996.
