Coverage characteristics

5.1.1 Statistical presentation

The balance of payments data are disseminated in conformity with the fifth edition of the IMF's "Balance of Payments Manual" (effective from the data for the first quarter of 1998). Data, in Danish Kroner, are presently comprising income and expenditure (credits and debits) for the following items: goods; services (sub-items: sea transport and travel); compensation of employees; investment income; current transfers (sub-item: European Union transfers); current account total; and capital account. Under financial account the only item published by Statistics Denmark is the change in Denmark's reserve assets (net).

4.1.1 Periodicity

- Imports as well as exports of goods and services are quarterly data.

- Balance of payment figures are monthly data.

Timeliness

4.1.2 Timeliness

- Quarterly data for imports as well as exports of goods and services
are released not later than 12 weeks after the end of the reference
quarter.
- Monthly data for the balance of payments are released not later than
7 weeks after the end of the reference month."

Advance dissemination of
release calendar

5.1.3 Advance release calendar

Statistics Denmark disseminates a quarter-ahead advance release calendar that gives approximate release dates on the DSBB and it is available in Danish on Statistics Denmark's home page (www.dst.dk). The precise release dates are disseminated at the end of the week prior to the release of the data in "Nyt fra Danmarks Statistik", in Danish and English. A regular notice to this effect is published in the "Nyt fra Danmarks Statistik" ("News from Statistics Denmark").

Simultaneous release to all
interested parties

5.1.4 Simultaneous release

Data are released to all interested parties at 9:30 a.m. CET, by issuing the news release "Nyt fra Danmarks Statistik" at www.dst.dk and at www.statbank.dk. Embargo procedures are stated in the working plan for statistics Denmark. All interested parties can obtain a copy or fax of the News Release on request.

0.1.1 Responsibility for collecting, processing, and disseminating statistics

All statistics are collected and published according to the "Act on Statistics Denmark" §6 (LBK nr. 15 af 12 januar 1972 and changed by Act nr. 386 of 13 June 1990 and Act nr.1025 af 19 December 1992) and the "Act on the Compilation of Index of Net Retail Prices" of February 3, 1999.

Balance of payments

The "Act on Statistics Denmark" specifies that Statistics Denmark is an independent institution governed by a Board of Governors, of which the chairman is the Director General of Statistics Denmark. The Board consists of 6 persons who all have insight into social and economic conditions. The Board makes decisions of major financial significance, on the nature of information to be collected and also on the working plans of Statistics Denmark.

0.1.2 Data sharing and coordination among data producing agencies

Statistics Denmark is the official compiler of the Danish balance of payments statistics. However, responsibility for compiling balance of payments statistics is shared between Statistics Denmark and Danmarks Nationalbank. Statistics Denmark compiles data for the current account, except investment income, and the capital account. In addition, Statistics Denmark compiles part of the public sector's financial account and forwards the data to Danmarks Nationalbank. Danmarks Nationalbank compiles data for the financial account and investment income account

0.1.3 Confidentiality of individual reporters' data

According to the "Public Authorities' Registers Act" (LBK nr. 621 by 2 Oktober 1987, and changed by § 11 by Act nr. 192 of 29 March 1989 and Act nr. 346 of June 1991 and Act nr. 654 of 20 September 1991), data attributable to identifiable individuals (or enterprises) shall not be passed on.

Revisions are commented upon in the issue of the news release containing the revised data. The data become final approximately two years after the first release and are published in "Statistiske Efterretninger: Nationalregnskab og Betalingsbalance" ("National Accounts and Balance of Payments").

Summary notes appear in each news release. More detailed information appears in "Metodologi for Danmarks betalingsbalance", Eurostat, 1985 (out of print). This document contains a detailed description of the methodology used in English and French, as well as Danish. This publication should be available in the public library system.

The "Nyt – Betalingsbalancens finansielle poster" publish detailed monthly time series from 1999 and forward, covering capital imports (broken down by sector and by instrument), errors and omissions and change in the foreign-exchange reserves. Annual data for 1995-1998 are also available.
