The Data: Coverage, Periodicity, and Timeliness
Coverage characteristics	5.1.1 Statistical presentation Data are re-disseminated on the Nikkei Stock Average. The Nikkei Average is the adjusted average price of 225 stocks traded in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (address: 2-1, Nihonbashi-kabuto-cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, 103-8220, Japan; Fax: 81 3 3663 0625). The divisor is adjusted to make the index continuous in the event of non-market price changes, such as stock splits and changes in the constituents. The first value of the index is for May 16, 1949. Since the Nikkei Average is an average price similar to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, there is no base year or date when the index is set to 100 or 1000. Data used to compile the average are at market closing. The index is the private property of Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc.
