Unit description:  June 2002 second fortnight =100.

 

Data are disseminated on the NCPI, a Laspeyres index (June 2002 second fortnight = 100) covering urban consumers living in towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

 

Price information is gathered from 15,000 retail outlets and 5,000 rental housing units, 190,000 prices are gathered each month for 315 generic products and services in 46 cities. For food items, daily information is obtained; for non-food items, bi-weekly observations are obtained. Rents are collected every six months. Data are not seasonally adjusted.

The Banco of México is an autonomous body which operates under the Banco de México Law of December 1993. The law authorizes the Banco de México to publish economic and financial statistics. Article 62 (1) states the following: " The Banco de México shall be entitled, in conjunction with other competent authorities, to prepare, collect, and publish economic and financial statistics, operate information systems based thereon, and collect the data necessary for such purposes."

Banco de México is obligated by law to disseminate data on the consumer price index (decree published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (Official Gazette) of July 28th 1989). The Law is available on the Internet http://www.banxico.org.mx/sitioingles/tipo/disposiciones/index.html


The Law on National Statistics and Geographic Information published in the "Diario Oficial de la Federación" (Official Gazette) on April 16, 2008, states that the principles of confidentiality and discretion are preserved, and the communication of data by name or individual agent  is forbidden (Article 38). Furthermore, the agreement signed between Banco de Mexico and data sources guarantees the confidentiality of the source but not of the data.
