The Data: Coverage, Periodicity, and Timeliness
Coverage characteristics

5.1.1 Statistical presentation

The wholesale price index (WPI), which is compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Data Processing (INEI), is of the Laspeyres type (1994=100) and measures trends in the prices of a representative group of goods traded on wholesale markets in 25 Peruvian cities.

The WPI covers 394 products, classified by sector (agriculture and livestock, fishing, and manufacturing) and by source (domestic and imported). Prices are collected from some 520 establishments twice a month in metropolitan Lima and 25 cities of the interior, inclusive of taxes and shipping costs.

The weights used to calculate the index are derived from the 1994 input-output table, the INEI’s national accounts, reports of the National Superintendency of Tax Administration (SUNAT), and the publications of relevant ministries.

The data are not seasonally adjusted.
